Collection: Contributions to Canadian Landscapes
Contributions to Canadian landscapes is an ongoing series that focuses on single stones collected from locations Senetchko has hiked over the last 18 years. Rather than the iconic vistas of Canadian landscape painting reputation, each painting in this series focuses on a detail of the area from which it was gathered.
These stones stand as a symbolic representation of its respective area, a souvenir for the artist of the landscape to which it contributes, and a tribute to the often overlooked details of grand scenes.
Pursuant to this last point, the artist finds these totemic paintings to be metaphorically analagous to the overshadowed nature of other types of Canadian art. Senetchko sees Canadian art as being just as conceptually and technically rich, and just as relevant as might be offered by any other city or country globally. These paintings also therefore stand as a reminder that there is much more to Canadian art than landscapes.
